9th – 15th May 2022 Our reflections during ME Awareness Week
It is ME Awareness Day today. ME/CFS is a hugely misunderstood condition, often misattributed to mental health than the debilitating physical neurological condition it is in reality. Very few conditions that are dismissed in this way.
It has a profound effect on all aspects of life, often causing people to make sacrifices in one area of their life in order to be fulfilled and successful in another. Due to a lack of understanding and adjustments in society, ME can put massive strains on relationships and family life.
There has been an increased awareness of ME due to the emergence of Long Covid. Like other viruses, Covid itself could lead to relapse or longer term debility in people who already have ME, but they have been largely ignored throughout the pandemic.
Greater awareness is always a good thing because it means people can better articulate their needs and be understood, which will help people in their employment and in personal lives. Thankfully the days of calling it “Yuppie Flu” are long gone!
