As a former Civil Servant, I have always taken the constitutional role of the Monarch as Head of State very seriously. The Nolan Principles of Public Life were very much embodied in The Queen, in the way she carried out her leadership duties, right to the very end of her life. I still can’t quite get out of my head the image of her shaking new Prime Minister Liz Truss’ hand just two days beforehand when she was clearly very unwell – what an incredible sense of duty.
