Gynae Cancer Awareness Month

September is Gynae Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know in the UK, 58 people are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer and sadly 21 die each day from gynae cancer?

Often gynae cancers are picked up late, when they have already started to spread. This is due to a number of factors, but often because concerns are put down to other causes, women are not always listened to, or because talking about these things can still be taboo. This is why supporting gynae (and reproductive) health in the workplace is one of our main policy areas.

Questions to think about:

  • Do you have policies or practices in place which enable and employer people to take time out to check out any health concerns?
  • Do they know they will be supported if they need to seek treatment?
  • Can they work flexibly, work from home, or take a few days’ paid leave if they are in severe pain, bleeding heavily, or need treatment?
  • Are employees who receive life changing diagnoses offered support through EAP or occupational health?

These sorts of things make so much difference and really do break down barriers in work.
