Dementia Action Week

This week is Dementia Action Week. 1 in 3 people with dementia does not have the diagnosis they need to get appropriate care, treatment, or support. The Alzheimer’s Society uses this week to raise awareness of the importance of getting an early diagnosis.

Some positive actions you can take include becoming a Dementia Friend and ensuring your workplace is Dementia Friendly.

Our CEO, Laura Evans, has been a Dementia Friend since the initiative launched, having been inspired after the grief of losing a beloved relative to heart complications caused by Alzheimer’s. Laura’s family received wonderful support from the Alzheimer’s Society and she wanted to give something back.

As a Dementia Friend, you learn important skills enabling you to help to create a fairer and more dementia friendly society.

Over the years, Laura has been able to put this to practical use in many ways through supporting colleagues; providing advice on making workplaces dementia friendly through policies and practices; and, signposting people to the Alzheimer’s Society and other forms of support.

Early signs and symptoms may manifest in work so it’s important for all employers to be aware and supportive when people are going through a diagnosis. As with all long term illnesses, colleagues whose loved ones live with dementia may need flexible working arrangements or time off to help with caring responsibilities.

The training has also been invaluable outside of work too, supporting others through their care and grief.
