This week (18th – 24th May) is Dementia Action Week. 1 in 3 people with any form of Dementia does not have the diagnosis they need to get appropriate care, treatment, or support that they need.
Some positive actions you can take include becoming a Dementia Friend and ensuring your workplace is Dementia Friendly.
I’ve been a Dementia Friend since the initiative launched, having been inspired by my grief and a desire to make a difference for other people.
As a Dementia Friend, you learn important skills enabling you to help to create a fairer and more dementia friendly society.
Over the years, I have been able to put this to practical use in many ways through supporting colleagues; providing advice on making workplaces dementia friendly through policies and practices; and, signposting people to the Alzheimer’s Society and other forms of support.
There’s a myth that this is an old person’s disease. Early signs and symptoms may manifest in work so it’s important for all employers to be aware and supportive when people are going through a diagnosis. As with all long term illnesses, colleagues whose loved ones live with dementia may need flexible working arrangements or time off to help with caring responsibilities.
The training has also been invaluable outside of work too, supporting others through their care and grief.
