Women should say ‘no’ to ‘office housework’

Following media reports that women are asked to undertake ‘office housework’ tasks, our CEO, Laura Evans, comments:

“Just say no! I’ve certainly seen this play out in my career and it is not just women but other under represented groups in the workplace who suffer this indignity when colleagues try to exert authority over others, or who try to belittle or demean their work, experience, skills, role, or position.

The art of saying ‘no’ to menial and demeaning tasks is an important and empowering skill, which ultimately brings so much more respect because it does not let someone exert authority when they have no right to do so.

Left unchecked, it enables a hierarchical culture where bullying and harassment, exclusion, and discrimination all thrive at the expense of wellbeing and engagement, increased absences, employment relations issues, and higher rates of attrition.”
