Employment Rights Bill

Today, we finally get to see the details as the government lays its long awaited Employment Rights Bill before Parliament.

The online briefing notes indicate it will bring forward 28 individual employment reforms.

A busy day for employment lawyers, business leaders and employers, and HR professionals, to name a few!

Glass Ceilings® has of course been following this closely since the General Election and our CEO, Laura Evans, has fed into some of the wider consultations through industry bodies and business groups that she sits on. However, it has at times felt like consultation on the drafting of the Bill was limited to narrow and invited bodies. We will feed into formal consultations on the Bill in due course.

We haven’t commented publicly before now as we were awaiting the detail, but we’ll bring analysis and thoughts as the Bill passes through Parliament.

Laura says: “I’m keen to understand if some of the proposed changes will be as rigid as those consulted on or whether there will be sufficient flexibility to meet the demands of modern life and employment.

I’m also interested to see whether some of the macro effects on the labour market are reflected in this Bill, namely post-Brexit and emerging from the worldwide pandemic where high levels of sickness and disability are affecting the UK. There are around 9 million people currently unable to work full time – that is more than 20% of the working age population! – so any legislative reforms must reflect this lived reality, rather than being politically motivated.”
